The intervention aimed to restore authenticity to one of the few buildings in Lisbon’s Baixa to have survived the 1755 earthquake, removing later additions that had obscured its essence and recovering its structure, decorative ceilings and the original reading of the ground-floor shops.

A fully transparent glass lift preserves the nobility of the stairwell, while timeless materials such as wide timber flooring with a diamond stereotomy inspired by Lisbon’s secular churches, Estremoz white marble and new timber window frames, lend coherence and serenity to the interiors. The master suites of the apartments on the left-hand side (floors 2 to 5) incorporate free-standing volumes housing the bathrooms, introducing a contemporary domestic morphology.

On the roof level, new duplex apartments are animated by skylights and dormers; in one of them, the living area achieves a double-height space articulated by a bespoke mezzanine.

An exercise in restraint and respect that sought to restore authenticity and bring new life to the building.
