The refurbishment and extension of a Lisbon building near the Centro Cultural de Belém and the Tagus River sought to balance contemporary design with historical preservation. Originally housing a ground-floor commercial unit and two small apartments, the structure was reimagined to create two triplex residences.
A two-storey extension, with the roof clad in zinc, maximized views of the Tagus River and the 25th of April Bridge. The retained front façade preserved the building’s character, while the rear featured a contemporary design with pocket windows for enhanced natural light.
The lower triplex includes three ensuite bedrooms, while the upper features two bedrooms sharing a bathroom and an ensuite. The top floor of the upper unit was dedicated to social spaces, optimizing light and views. A material palette of wood, stone, and glass searche d for timelessness, complemented by custom MDF joinery. Dual access points, through a shared hall or separate entrances, enhanced functionality within the compact urban site.
